Better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life

Collective action across 150 countries is what makes World Food Day on October 16 one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar. With a growing middle class, there is a demand for more healthy, nutritious not to mention sustainable and innovative food and this year, it is time to look into the future we need to build together.

The Danish government has set an ambitious climate goal: To reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% in 2030. Denmark’s food and agriculture sector plays a vital role in reaching this goal amplified with a historic agreement endorsed by parties across the parliament on October 4.

Here, Denmark agreed on binding carbon emission targets for its agricultural industry and by 2030, emissions must reduced by 55-65 percent.

Climate-friendly dietary guidelines

This calls for a more sustainable approach and practises in both production and consumption habits. Therefore, Denmark’s dietary guidelines has climate-friendly food in mind.

“The dietary guidelines have for decades given good advice on how we can eat healthy, and it is obvious that they are now taking the step further and helping the Danes who also want to eat more climate-friendly,” says Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Rasmus Prehn.

The guidelines embrace health and climate. Fortunately, what is healthy for the climate is typically healthy for us.

Danish products that make a difference

One of the fastest growing food categories is the plant-based sector which experiences double digit growth in a trend that is expected to see sales reach $80 billion worldwide by 2024. The Danish agricultural and food cluster has a clear focus on developing this area and to provide consumers all over the world with high-quality plant-based food.
