Detecting invisible toxins in minutes

Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by moulds that contaminate up to 25 percent of the world’s harvested crops each year. These invisible toxins pose serious risks to human and animal health and are responsible for global losses estimated at up to EUR 6.7 billion annually. As climate change drives more extreme weather, higher temperatures and increased humidity, the conditions for fungal growth are becoming more favourable. This increases the risk of contamination across global grain supply chains.

Producers must therefore combine speed, precision and thorough documentation in their quality control. However, traditional on-site testing methods are often complex and time consuming, involving several manual steps that increase the risk of human error. In markets defined by strict regulation and strong consumer expectations, the industry requires faster and more reliable solutions.

Automated Danish technology for on-site testing

MycoFoss™ is the world’s first fully automated rapid test for mycotoxins. The solution enables producers to analyse up to six major mycotoxins in wheat and maize in a single test in just eight minutes. With automated workflows and fast turnaround, it can support up to 50 samples per eight-hour shift, making routine and systematic screening feasible where testing was previously limited to spot checks.

Independent comparative tests have shown MycoFoss™ to deliver more than 90 percent accuracy, outperforming conventional rapid test methods

The testing process is simple. A ground sample is placed in a cup, inserted into the instrument and analysed automatically. By removing complex manual procedures, the system ensures consistent reagent handling and reliable results while reducing the need for specialist staff.

The technology combines established bioanalytical methods with a rapid, laser-based technology to deliver quantitative results with low detection limits and wide measurement ranges. Designed for use at grain reception sites, feed mills and processing facilities, the instrument is robust and suited to demanding production environments. Digital connectivity allows companies to store and access analytical data centrally, supporting documentation and compliance with strict regulations.

Stronger food safety and reduced waste

Through MycoFoss™, FOSS provides producers with a future-ready platform for mycotoxin risk management. Independent comparative tests have shown MycoFoss™ to deliver more than 90 percent accuracy, outperforming conventional rapid test methods where many laboratories achieved significantly lower accuracy at the same mycotoxin levels.

Early and accurate detection helps prevent contaminated grain from entering the food and feed chain. This reduces the risk of recalls, protects brand reputation and minimises food waste.

More accessible and frequent testing strengthens compliance and improves transparency throughout the value chain. Through Danish analytical expertise, FOSS contributes to a more resilient grain sector and supports safe, high-quality food production.
