New Danish innovation center will explore the full potential of milk and whey to meet the growing world’s needs

The Danish dairy company Arla Foods will build an innovation center in Nr. Virum, in the western part of Jutland. The main reason is to explore the full potential of the whey. The new innovation center should house leading researchers and innovators who will explore and deliver new ways of using milk and whey to meet the growing world’s needs.

With an investment of 36.3 million. EUR, Arla Foods now creates a research and development center for whey and milk-based ingredients.

“With the new innovation center, we will use advanced research and technology to explore the full potential of milk and whey as ingredients for food and specialized nutrition,” says Peder Tuborgh, Managing Director of Arla Foods.

We know that the nutrients of milk can play an important role in ensuring a healthy and balanced diet for people around the world

The investment in the innovation center, which is expected to open in 2021, was recently approved by Arla Foods’ Board. The center is part of Arla Foods Ingredients (AFI), Arla’s subsidiary, which has transformed whey from what was once considered a waste product to ingredients used for infant nutrition, clinical nutrition, sports nutrition, specialized nutrition and other food and beverages. “Our focus is to explore all components in milk and whey and combine them to improve the nutritional or functional value of the product. We will investigate even deeper in our new innovation center, says Henrik Andersen, Director of Arla Foods Ingredients.

The new innovation center will be located in Nr. Virum close to Arla Foods Ingredients largest production site, Denmark Protein. In the center, researchers, technicians and innovators will cover all aspects of research and development in the field of whey and milk. From advanced separation technologies to isolate specific parts of whey or milk – for heat treatment and pasteurization technology to improve functionality and durability.
