Climate neutral food production by 2050
The Danish Agriculture and Food Council has announced a strategy that will make Danish food production completely climate neutral by 2050. In accordance with UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, Denmark will take the lead in producing more with less.
The Danish food industry is already well advanced and has one of the most climate-friendly productions in the world. For example, Danish milk production has the lowest greenhouse-gas emission per liter of milk produced in Europe, and the second-lowest emission when it comes to beef production.
In the decades to come, this development will be taken a step further. The Danish Agriculture and Food Council has announced a strategy that will make Danish food production completely climate neutral by 2050, meaning that it will not emit more greenhouse gasses than it absorbs.
In 2050, there will be approximately 10 billion people worldwide, and the global demand for both animal and vegetable foods will increase heavily, thus creating a need for sustainable solutions all around the world.
If we are going to be able to feed the world’s growing population while solving the climate challenges, there is a need for innovative solutions and new technology, says Anne Lawaetz Arhnung, CEO of The Danish Agriculture and Food Council. To achieve the goals in the new strategy, the development will be sparked by a thorough collaboration between the Danish food industry, the Danish government and public research institutions.
The newly launched strategy goes in line with the latest week’s climate-strategy announcements from the Danish food cluster, in which three major cooperatives, Danish Crown, DLG and Arla Foods, both declared ambitious goals when it comes to their climate emissions.
