Ukraine seeks to transform land use with inspiration from the ‘Agreement on a Green Denmark’
A newly signed agreement between Denmark and Ukraine, announced during New York Climate Week 2025, strengthens bilateral cooperation on the green transition and food system innovation. The partnership focuses on sustainable land-use transformation, climate-smart agriculture, and the development of a resilient bioeconomy.
Signed at The Denmark House in New York, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes a formal partnership between Ukraine’s newly formed Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture and Denmark’s Ministries for Green Transition and for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. The agreement marks a new milestone in Danish–Ukrainian collaboration, as Ukraine looks to Denmark’s innovative tripartite model as a blueprint for the renewal of Ukrainian land use.
Denmark’s Agreement on a Green Denmark, uniting government, industry, and civil society, will serve as a framework for joint efforts in policy development, implementation, and stakeholder engagement. The model, anchored in Denmark’s cooperative roots, offers Ukraine a proven foundation for system-wide change across land-use and the agricultural sector.
Innovation as the driver of sustainable transformation
The MoU establishes a platform for knowledge exchange on innovative solutions, including financial mechanisms for green investments, nature-based approaches to carbon mitigation, and multifunctional agriculture that integrates productivity with environmental and climate goals. Ukraine will draw on Denmark’s experience in establishing participatory processes that ensure innovation is both effective and socially balanced.
This cooperation also supports Ukraine’s ambitions to align with EU food and environmental standards. With Danish support, the partnership will empower a new generation of Ukrainian farmers and agri-food entrepreneurs to lead the green transition and scale resilient, future-proof solutions.
A forward-looking framework for resilient and sustainable land use
Denmark’s Agreement on a Green Denmark, introduced in 2024, is a globally pioneering multistakeholder agreement that includes the world’s first carbon tax on livestock emissions. Developed through broad political consensus, the agreement safeguards biodiversity, preserves the competitiveness of the agri-food sector, and sets a benchmark for integrating innovation into national strategies for achieving climate and environmental targets.
Ukraine stands to draw inspiration from Denmark’s integrated approach to climate and agri-food transformation, where innovation and collaboration are key enablers. Danish expertise in data-driven policy, sustainable production, and innovative technologies offers valuable insights for rebuilding a scalable and resilient bioeconomy in Ukraine.
